The Shawnee Indians first recognized the healing powers of these sulfur springs, which later attracted settlers in 1778. Over time, this serene valley in West Virginiaโ€™s Allegheny Mountains evolved into an 11,000-acre resort, with a stately 582-room Georgian hotel and 128 guest cottages. Now a National Historic Landmark, the resort offers a wide range of activities including tennis, golf, bowling, and falconry, along with its famous mineral baths. Spring 2010 saw the opening of The Casino at The Greenbrier, adding table games, slot machines, and upscale dining to its offerings.

The Greenbrier boasts a rich tennis history, with legends like Bill Tilden and Ellsworth Vines once playing on its grass courts. Today, it offers a more modest complex with 10 courts, including a 2,500-seat stadium and five indoor courts for year-round play. Tennis programs include daily clinics, doubles drills, and junior clinics, with pickleball also available on one indoor court. Court fees are $49/hour for outdoor play and $60/hour indoors.

The Greenbrier offers three golf courses: the Old White Course (1914), the Greenbrier Course (redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1977), and the Meadows Course (1962). The resortโ€™s historic mineral-springs spa has been expanded to provide a wide range of services, and the fitness center overlooks the indoor tennis courts. Beyond tennis and golf, guests can enjoy swimming, horseback riding, bowling, fishing, shooting sports, mountain biking, falconry, and more. The Greenbrier provides a vast selection of recreational activities for all interests.
