Overview

Over 100 years ago, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company purchased land in Arizona’s Salt River Valley to grow cotton for tire production, building Organization House (now the Fireplace Lounge) for executives. In 1929, the property opened to the public as a seasonal resort, eventually expanding to a year-round resort with 331 casitas and suites. Following a major rejuvenation after sports icon Jerry Colangelo bought it in 2009, the 440-acre resort retains its original lodge and now includes various gathering spots, a signature restaurant, live music venues, firepits, and an expanded swimming pool. The resort’s pueblo-inspired cottages and buildings are connected by footpaths, creating a unique and sprawling environment unlike typical hotels.

Inside the Lines

Under Jerry Colangelo, tennis at the resort thrived with the hiring of director Carlos Hassey, known for his credentials and enthusiasm. Hassey revitalized the tennis program with family tennis, kids clinics, leagues, ball machine workouts, and game matching, along with monthly social events. The resort features nine courts, including a sunken stadium court with Plexicushion, and hard courts with two lined for pickleball. The pro shop offers a sitting area, retail, and an adjacent activities area with arcade games, making it a welcoming spot for guests. Court fees are $16 per day.

Outside the Lines

Golf was key in the Wigwam’s evolution from guest ranch to resort, with Robert Trent Jones Sr. designing the Gold (7,430-yard Par 72) and Patriot (6,000-yard) courses, and Robert "Red" Lawrence creating the Heritage course. The Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa at the Wigwam blends Southwestern culture with health-focused beauty treatments in a 26,000-square-foot space next to the fitness center and Motion studio. Dining options include the farm-to-table Litchfield’s for dinner, Red’s Bar & Grill at the golf clubhouse, and the Wigwam Bar for casual meals. The poolside Tower Bar & Grill offers a kid-friendly menu and adult fare like margaritas and salads.

Lodging

The 331 rooms at the Wigwam are spread across the property in adobe structures, offering views of lawns, gardens, pools, and the tennis complex. Recently refurbished, they blend historic Western decor with modern amenities like Italian linens, oversized baths, and high-speed internet. Some rooms also feature gaslog fireplaces.

Travel

The Wigwam is open year-round, with the most comfortable weather from October to May. The resort is about a 30-minute drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).
