The Resort lakefront is for the use of all residents: playground, swimming area, marina, dock sites, picnic areas, campfire rings, and nature trails spread along our half mile shore. There are 224 licensed boat slips on seasonal docks. Many residents own their dock or share one with a neighbor. Others rent a boat slip from the Resort in the marina. A boat ramp and a fish cleaning house are available. For storage, residents may use our fenced storage area or rent a carport or mini-storage unit at reasonable rates.
Covering some 400 acres and fed by the Portage Rivers, Bear Creek and natural springs, Portage Lake enjoys an abundant supply of fresh water. Two thirds of its shoreline is undeveloped, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife. Fish include large and smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappy, bluegill, perch and others. Pontoon and fishing boats predominate on the lake, but there’s also plenty of room for water skiing or jet boating. Those with canoes and kayaks enjoy exploring both the lake and its tributaries. In fact, Portage Lake is the start of one of our state historic water trails! The resort actively supports our lake association, Friends of Portage Lake, and makes a significant contribution to a special assessment for invasive weed control.
There’s so much more to do outdoors than just enjoy the lake! Golfers use the water tower field as a practice driving range before visiting one of the 8 area golf courses. On a still evening, Remote Control Aircraft hobbyists show off their skills. It’s a dog-walker heaven; our paved streets and off-road trails are also great for bikers, joggers and walkers. Gardeners enjoy the use of our garden spaces; we even give you a free spring roto-tilling. Picnic tables and campfire rings dot our lakefront common areas. For the winter hardy, the Resort is great for ice fishing and cross country skiing too.
