From my cottage porch, I can see Hilton Head Island across the May River, but Montage Palmetto Bluff offers a different experience, with marshy views and tranquil surroundings. Although remote from the bustling Hilton Head, the cottage is filled with modern comforts, including a gas-log fireplace, a surround-sound system, and a 42-inch plasma TV. Palmetto Bluff, set on 20,000 acres of unspoiled Lowcountry landscape, offers a peaceful retreat without the crowds, featuring a village green, a historic chapel, and the River House for dining and socializing. Boat excursions to nearby Daufuskie Island’s beaches are also available.

The Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club, a 10-minute walk or quick bike ride from the cottages, features eight Har-Tru tennis courts, two professional croquet courts, and two bocce courts, all set within a scenic forest backdrop. The facility is anchored by a large pro shop and pavilion with cedar-shake shingles, creating a charming atmosphere for play. Tennis director Michael Sutcliffe, with extensive experience in the region, offers a mix of programs for both local members and resort guests, increasing activities like clinics and social events during holiday periods. The complex includes 8 outdoor clay courts, 4 of which are lit for night play.

The May River Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus, features an 18-hole course winding through forests along the May River.
