Legendary tennis coach Dennis Van der Meer passed away on July 27, 2019. Known for his upbeat teaching style and ability to remember every player’s name and needs, he made a lasting impact on the tennis world. Shipyard Plantation on Hilton Head Island, home to the Van Der Meer Shipyard Tennis Resort, is a serene 800-acre property with a 20-court tennis center and the beachfront Sonesta Resort. Tennis players can book packages through the Van Der Meer organization for special deals with local hotels and villas.

Billie Jean King was the touring pro at Shipyard Plantation in 1974, and nearly 20 years later, Dennis Van der Meer bought the racquet club, adding three indoor courts and upgrading the facilities. Dr. Louis Cap, a PTR Master Professional, leads most clinics with the Van Der Meer staff, offering year-round adult programs ranging from basic clinics to advanced drills. The 20-court complex includes 14 clay courts, six hard courts (three indoor), and a stadium court. Court fees range from $15-$18 per hour, with discounts for those on Van Der Meer clinic packages.

Shipyard's only beach access is a small strip behind the Sonesta Resort, with wide sands dotted by blue umbrellas and beach tricycles. The property also offers 27 holes of golf. At the Sonesta, the Arum Spa provides massages, body treatments, and facials, while the 24-hour fitness center has cardio equipment and weights. For kids, the Sonesta runs the "Just Us Kids" program, available full or half-day from Memorial Day to Labor Day for children ages 3-12.

Tennis is available year-round at Shipyard, though the beach is less appealing from late November to early March due to cooler weather. Winter offers some of the best deals on lodging and discounted clinics. Shipyard is 45 miles from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) and 95 miles from Charleston International Airport (CHS), with major airlines serving both. Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) also offers commuter flights, with rental cars and shuttles available at all airports.
