The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor owes much of its grandeur to its developer, Spencer Penrose, a mining magnate who transformed a small hotel at the base of Pike’s Peak into one of the world’s finest resorts. He hired the renowned architectural firm Warren & Wetmore to design the Italian Renaissance-inspired structure and brought artisans from Italy to hand-decorate the interiors. Penrose and his wife filled the resort with art and furnishings worldwide, while Frederick Law Olmsted landscaped the grounds and Donald Ross designed the first of three golf courses. Opened in 1918, the Broadmoor quickly became a luxurious retreat known for its European opulence and stunning mountain setting.

Director of Racquet Sports Karen Schott leads a team of tennis and pickleball coaches at the Broadmoor, with summer featuring special appearances by WTA pro Allie Kiick and her coach, Lisa Raymond, an 11-time Grand Slam doubles champion. The resort offers a range of programs, including weekend summer and fall camps, like those with Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander, and "Tennis With a Taste of Tuscany" weekends that pair tennis with Tuscan cuisine and wine. Weekly activities include private lessons, clinics, junior camps, and complimentary round robins, supplemented by adult and junior camps. The court complex includes three terraced hard courts, three pickleball courts, and two Har-Tru courts, with winter play available under a bubble on two courts.

Golf at the Broadmoor is available to resort guests and members, with three courses designed by legends like Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones, and Arnold Palmer. The East Course, built in 1918, is the most forgiving, while the West Course offers rolling fairways and city views, and the Mountain Course, though under partial reconstruction, is the most challenging. The resort also features a 90,000-square-foot Spa and Fitness Center with a full range of treatments, indoor and outdoor pools, and fitness facilities overlooking the golf course. Additional amenities include children's programs, bicycle rentals, fly-fishing, horseback riding, and dining options ranging from an English pub to the award-winning Summit bistro.

The Broadmoor offers around 700 guest rooms surrounding Lake Cheyenne, along with 44 cottages and brownstones near the courts and golf course. The original hotel rooms have been refurbished into luxurious suites, featuring Edwardian elegance, antique-style furnishings, and modern amenities like bedside touch screens. The newer seven-story West Tower, built in 1997, offers spacious rooms with French doors opening to terraces with mountain, lake, or golf course views. The resort also provides pet-friendly accommodations, including special services for pets.

The Broadmoor is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the high season from May to September, when tennis activities are at their peak. The resort is located 11 miles from Colorado Springs Airport (COS).
