During my last visit to Waterville Valley Resort, 24 people joined a social round-robin for a $2 fee to cover balls, with pairings organized by playing cards. Waterville’s 18 red-clay courts, terraced on a grassy hillside and surrounded by mountains, are among the most scenic I’ve experienced. The resort offers a “Summer Unlimited” package through various lodges and condos, providing complimentary access to tennis, golf, bike rentals, watersports, the athletic club, mountain trails, and ice skating. The resort’s Town Square, with shops and restaurants, sits beside a pond and creek, surrounded by inns, lodges, and condos.

Waterville Valley Resort's tennis tradition dates back to 1884, featuring the original red-clay court that has been in continuous use and now serves as a sunken stadium. The complex has expanded to include 18 red-clay courts and two indoor synthetic grass courts. Tennis director Tom Gross, Jr., who trained with legends like Rod Laver and Roy Emerson, focuses on keeping lessons fun and tailored to each player's schedule. The resort offers daily 90-minute clinics, round robins, and summer weekend tournaments, with no court fees for those on "Summer Unlimited" packages; otherwise, fees are $20/hour for singles and $28 for 90 minutes of doubles.

The resort features a 9-hole golf course on the valley floor, with guest privileges at the nearby Owl's Nest Golf Course, a 6,818-yard, par 72 course designed to suit all skill levels. The Athletic Club offers pools, whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms, and fitness equipment, along with massage services. Outdoor activities include kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, and ice skating, while a summer camp for children ages 4-16 offers varied activities. Dining options include several eateries, from casual delis to seafood and steaks at the Wild Coyote Grill.
